Mendon Food Stand

Posted by Jon Kelly at Jul 25, 2010 9:05AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Thanks to all the people who helped and helped and helped at the Mendon Food Stand this past weekend. A smooth coordinated effort paid off for a successful event.
A great big special thank you Kirk and Wendy Obray for their organization and untiring work on the food stand. Without their dedication, organization, and hard work things would not have ran as smoothly.
Way to Go Wolverines

Summer

Posted by Jon Kelly at Jun 19, 2010 7:53AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

We are off and running (literally) with summer practice. It will be a short time till the Cache Cup is here. At practice we introduced goals for the summer. Please ask your player about the goals.
1. TEAM stands for Together Everyone achieves More (obviously letters of team expanded). We changed it to Talking Everyone Achieves More. Our team has an issue with communication. We need players to step up and be more vocal. When we communicate on the field we play well. When we become silent, we have problems. Please discuss with your player ways in which they can contribute to "TEAM"
2. Home work is back for the summer. Our ball skills need to improve. We need to talk more risks with our feet. We need to become comfortable with the soccer skills on the homework sheet. If they do not do their homework once then they will be running two laps at practice. If they don’t do their homework twice, the team will run. You can find the homework sheet under the document section. Click on view all to find it.
3. Introduction and comfort with our new formation. We will play a 3-5-2 formation and modify it at times. Most of the world plays a 4-4-2 formation. We are aiming to control the midfield field and defend or attack quickly. As practices progress, please ask your player about the formation.
I appreciate your help with registration. It was frustrating in many ways, but you all came through.
We are registered for the Cache Cup. We will have a service project again this year in order to cut our registration fee in half. I will let you know your responsibility in the coming days.
Go Wolverines

Summer Games Rewind

Posted by Jon Kelly at Jun 14, 2010 2:35PM PDT ( 1 Comment )

As I look back at the Summer Games it was certainly a wild ride. We were up, we were down, but in the end we should all feel good with what occurred in Cedar City for many reasons. It is always hard to step into a foreign environment and not get to nervous to perform. I encourage you to comment and share your positive views on the Summer Games.
1. I think one of the biggest highlights was our second half against Infinity’s state Division 1 team. For well over 30 minutes we had them on their heels. You should be commended Wolverines for the effort we put out on the field the second half. Infinity is a quality team with gifted players. This shows us we can play with Division one state teams (State rankings go as such: Premiere, D1, D2, D3, D4). We played two D1 teams in Cedar City and competed. Murray Max took the gold and is a D1 team. We were 1 point away from a tie with them. This should be a confidence booster to the players. They should feel like they can step on the field with anyone, anytime. The problem we have is capturing this mentality.
It was fun to play Infinity the second half due to the intensity on the field. The fans on the sideline saw quality play. It would have been fun to tie it up and go into overtime. We had momentum.
2. Conner Leishman as goalie was a highlight for me. He saved over 60 shots on goal. He was hurt multiple times, yet got up every time and played a big part on the field.
3. Erik Neilson’s goal from almost half field against Murray Max was an eye opener. Wow, the power. Houston’s amazing goal against REAL Azteca in the last minute of play. I loved how the sideline erupted. Wow, I get chills thinking about that moment again and again. I think I jumped higher than the Wolverine Canopy. No, really I think I jumped higher than the canopy. Kaden Myers hitting the top goal post and then bouncing in against Infinity. Wow, impressive.
4. The opening ceremonies and walking on the track with the players were a highlight. Our banner flew high and proud. What the parents did not see before the procession were the Wolverines boys playing with the U14 Bulldogs from Cache Valley. They played multiple games that required them to actually touch hands with girls.
5. Swimming with players in the pool. I thought being together as families in the same hotel was great.
Even though we did not come home with hardware, we finished well in the top division. We could have won either of the two divisions below us. Our team received numerous positive comments from other teams down at Cedar City. Way to go Wolverines.
We begin a new chapter this week in Wolverine history. We go to 11 on the field. The number one concern for our team right now is talking.
Thanks
Jon
